Hi
not sure re co codamol,re ttc stage as not at that yet im at letting mtxd epart from my body stage,
planequil is same thing as hydroxucholorquine just 1 is brand name and one generic name.

its the lesser of dmards a anti malarial that is used for Ra,to reduce inflamation in joints etc also works well to reduce fatigue from lupus along with lessening of lupus rashes, flares and Lupus of which im unlucky to have both of.
my rheumy prescibred it.

hope gp appointment went well.

Hi,

You'll need to check re pain meds whilst trying to concieve. I have been told only paracetamol if in much pain now I am expecting.

There are a few meds which are deemed 'safe' in pregnancy- see what you're advised.

Love,

Amanda

hi! just to add to the discussion we conceived after a year of low dose prednisolone and a couple of big shots of kenalog. it definately affected my cycle. my gp was great though and we did the following - we had a private consultation with a gynae (about £70 but well worth it), he then gave us all the tests to check fertility on nhs which all came back o.k. then went on a set of tablets (provera?? name escapes me) to regualte my cycles again and then clomid to help ovulate. but we eventually conceived when taking none of the fertility drugs!! was able to come of steroids as soon as found out was pregnant and was ra free until about a month after aidan was born when it came back with a vengence!!! i would def push for fertility tests just to make sure that everything is o.k and if your cycle is affected by steroids there are ways to counter this. we also learnt the billings method of ferility which i swear is how we conceived ( measuring temp/mood changes and diff in discharge0. we got a dvd from life fertility care which went throughit all. so it can be done even though ttc was the hardest time as you just get so downbeat but just keep going and enjoy the exercise!!Love

Good luck with ttc.

We went through the mill a bit, but after 3 years ttc, we had Oisin over a year ago!

I stayed on Sulphasalazine throughout, but no anti-inflammatories. Luckily my RA went into remission throughout the pregnancy.

One thing I did do, with full support by all my consultants (Gynae, Rheumy and Diabetes) was go for refexology - which is known to help regulate your cycles and prime up the hormones lol. May be worth a try.

Hi all

I'm new here, been 2 1/2 yrs since I’ve been diagnosed with RA and I came off my medication 6 months ago as we planning for a baby. The pain been really badly since I stopped my methotrexate, been 2 months we've been trying but still nothing. I'm getting really desperate as my pain is getting really bad. The only thing they giving me is Methylprednisolone injection IM every 3 mths which not helping at all and taking Indomethacin 50mg/ Cocodamol 30/500 regular. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum BigGrin

I m sorry I really have no knowledge in this area, you could contact the NRAS helpline for their advice I have done this in the past and they are very helpful and understanding.

Lots of best wishes Julia x

I am taking Plaquenil and it is supposed to be safe during pregnancy. It takes a while to work as with most dmards but it might be worth asking your rheumatology team about this. good luck with everything.

Hi All,
We’ve been TTC the last couple of months but so far nothing. I was on MTX and I’ve stopped since November 2011, for the few months when I stopped my MTX the pain was bearable. But when it came to February 2012 the pain has become unbearableSad . Been taking Methyl Prednisolone Injection every 3 months it helps the first month but after that is not working at all. So far the steroid injection hasn’t interfered with my menses. My GP is so useless, whenever I go there she keep telling me to go back to my rheumy nurse. Anyway, contacted my rheumy nurse and she told me the only thing which is safe during the pregnancy is steroid. So she added prednisolone tablets for me to take for a short period. She advised me not to take any anti-inflammatory drugs and coco-damol but to take paracetamol only. Forgot to ask my nurse if Voltarol cream is good to use. Anyone here knows if we can use Voltarel cream? My feet are the worst joints being affected, it remains swollen and painful all the time (plus my job that I do is not helping at all-work as a HCASad . My hand, wrist, shoulder back of the neck and knees also painful. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Hi Amira

Sorry to hear of your predicament about trying to conceive. MTX can take a long time to get out of your system so you will have benefited to some extent in the early months of withdrawal. What is important, and can be difficult to achieve, is that the RA is adequately controlled before you try to conceive. It really is the rheumatologists responsibility to deal with this, not your GP.

Voltarol is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) containing Diclofenac and I would have thought (personal opinion only!) unsuitable for use as it is absorbed into the blood stream in the same way as other anti-inflammatories. I believe steroids are considered 'safe', I have been on them for 24 years, at varying doses, and had three pregnancies. That said, these days steroids for RA are largely regarded as a very short term measure only and used mainly to control flares. The long term effects of steroid use can be pretty dire; as much as you wish to conceive I would advise to proceed with caution. It sounds as though your RA is not controlled, and although you have only been trying to conceive for a couple of months this could actually be standing in the way. Steroids will not slow the progression of the RA but will simply mask the symptoms such as inflammation and some of the pain. You could actually be incuring joint damage whilst the Ra is uncontrolled.

I would be inclined to phone the NRAS helpline for guidance on what Disease Modifying drugs are currently considered suitable for use when trying to conceive. I would then get in touch with the rhumatologist for an early review of your condition and medication. I would like to think that once the RA is settled you would be in a better position to conceive.

Good luck,

Lyn x

Hi

Not been on for a while. There is a rheumatologist in Hampshire called dr Neil Buchanan consultant at the rhch in winchester who is specialist in pregnancy and conception and rheumatic diseases. He is NHs and private, might be worth a call also I have a contact who has struggled ttc for a long time and is at Harley street
He says sulphalazine, gold and plaquinil, azothyaprin are safe enough for pregnancy,
Ideally you wouldn't take anything other than paracetamol
But a poorly mum is going to prevent pregnancy and give stress to any unborn child so to me the risk on the drugs should be considered in that context
I struggled in my first trimester having thought we couldn't have a baby.
I started on injections of steroids.
Then went onto oral ones.
I couldn't do paracetamol, so did co-codamol but not to have morphine

I did copy my pregnancy diary somewhere here- think its on the blog part

All the best to you- stick with rheummy nurse for rheummy things is my advice!

Hi there

I also haven't logged on for sometime. Hope everyone who remembers me is doing well.

My daughter had fertility problems and part of IVF treatment is a regular dose of steroid. I can't remember the dose prescribed or why it is given but she took it for months. She now has a beautiful healthy 2 month old daughter.

Having gone through all the ups and downs of TTC with her I do wish you the very best of luck.

Brenda
